Baronet of NOVA SCOTIA'S Badge; a fine and very early gold and enamel badge set with pastes, the lion crowned the central shield bearing the rampant lion of Scotland upon a St. Andrew's cross surrounded by the legend 'FAX MENTIS HONESTE GLORIA', with integral loop for suspension, 64 mm, the plain gold back in engraved with a motto and crest, extremely fine and an attractive piece from circa 1780, near impossible to find The badge carries the crest and motto ('True to End') of the Hume-Campbell family is presumed to have belonged to Hugh Hume-CAmpbell, 3rd and last Earl of Marchmont (1708-1794). From a distinguished Scottish family, the recipient entered Parliament in 1734 as member for Berwick and made a reputation for himself as an anti-Walpolean Whig. He was appointed first Lord of Police (Scotland) in 1747 and held this post until 1764. He was representative Peer for Scotland, 1750-1784; Privy Councillor, 1762; Governor of the Bank of Scotland, 1763-1790; and Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland, 1764-1794.
